There is a disadvantage in the use of medication as the sole treatment for chronic pain. Over time, there may be a need for more powerful medication and increasing doses where side effects become more problematic -- even clouding of the mind or supression of the central nervous system.
 
Treating chronic pain with hypnosis has major advantages. There are no side effects -- no clouding of the mind. Dr. Phillips can even teach the patient self-hypnosis, to be used whenever convenient.
 
How effective is the use of hypnosis for chronic pain?
Results vary on a case by case basis simply because people are different.
There is a full spectrum of non-responders to complete responders, including the mid-range, where some medication would also be included.
